Rhythm In The Accordion Man

This is a rhythm tutorial for a bagpipe tune called "The Accordion Man".
Hello, thank you for your demonstration of the Gibson Fireside Pipes. I have recently bought a set in cocobella wood with brass mounts. Coming from the highland bagpipe which does not have a baritone drone, I am a little confused on how to tune these drones. And I also don’t have that adaptor. Is there anyway you can give a demo on tuning the baritone?
It was some time ago that I made this video. I like the concept of the small pipe. I have a few here. My problem with the baritone drone is that it only sounds good to me when playing the tunes in A. Tunes that end in A are in A. Amazing Grace is in D, which makes the baritone drone in my opinion sound dissonant. Years ago, I suggested to Jerry Gibson that he make another a baritone drone that can tune to both E and D and use an "AB"switch to shift back and forth. I've also suggested that to other manufacturers of small pipes and have been shown the door. I prefer to play a small pipe with a Bass and 2 Tenors so that I can play the tunes in any key and not have any problems. To answer your question, your baritone drone needs to be tuned to E. Scotland the Brave will sound fine, Amazing Grace will sound questionable in my opinion.
Isn’t this tuning the drones to the chanter? (Not the other way around)
I was probably drunk when I wrote the title. I fixed it. Thanks for being so observant.
Great stuff was about to give up, but walla you fixed that so I got the tools 🔧 so at least it's going forward 😀 cheers 🍻. Vincent
Thanks just the information I needed.
Hi you have helped me become a better piper!! and I thankyou
Thank you. This is very well explained and exactly what I needed.
I'm glad that I could help you.
Gary you have this excellent way of making it easy to understand.
Let me know if I can help you with anything else.
@@bagpipesforbeginners Hi Gary, Thanks for your reply. I think I've mastered the changer reed struggle. I've been playing or trying to play medium reeds for year's and I was ready to give up. I purchased a Colin MacLelland easy reed wow I can play with ease now. AVW Gandy changer.
Thanks Gary, great video. I recently transitioned to the pipes with all three drones corked and just the chanter. I'm finding that i tend to overblow the chanter but when i dial it back i lose the resistance on the bag. Any tips to find that balance?
Hey Andrew, you should follow my process. In this process we are developing breath. The chanter strength should be harder than all 3 drones put together. That's how you get a 2 stage start up drones to chanter. Follow the video.
Hi Gary! You’ve turned off comments under you “blowing, squeezing and tuning” video, so I’ll ask here. Let’s say my drones turn off at 130 and my High A turns off at 120. Two questions in this regard: 1. Is this OK that Low G starts to wobble between 125 and 130 or there something wrong with the reed? 2. Is it correct to make frequent exhales to keep the pressure between 120 and 125? I find that the required pressure drops very quickly, especially when I play quick tunes (e.g., Cork hill) and it seems that the only way I can keep the pressure is to blow frequently.
Why don't you submit a video showing the problem. Seeing is believing, right?
After reading this again it appears to me that you might be breathing with the musical phrase. That would account for the difference in Cork Hill.
Huff and Puff and blow your pipes away!!! 😂😂
Hi Gary! Thanks for the video. I didn’t quite get it: what particulary do you check when tuning the outside drone? Are you looking for beats to slow down?
That's correct. I move the tuning slide until the beats slow down and flat line and then move it down a little further as my chanter goes sharp when I put the bottom hand on it. Move, check, move, check etc. Let me know if you have any other questions.
But on which note do I have to look for wobbling to stop? Should I look for it on E or on Low A? Or on both?
@@sweetscience7817 I start out on either E or D as they are both perfect intervals from A. When the beats flat line, I check my low A. If I hear beats on low A I continue to move the drone down to make it sharper as my bottom had on the chanter raises the pitch slightly. I move, check, move check in until it is flat lined on the low A. I hope that I answered your question.

Nice playing! Nice and steady and harmonious. I like it!
Hi Gary don axe again do you sell the reeds for the rgh twist trap small pipes?
Yes, They're $22 a set plus shipping ($10.00).
Hi gary happy new year we ended up in sequim in2021
Hey Don, good to hear from you. We were in Sequim before you moved up there last year. I owe Dad a visit. Maybe some time this year. Have a great 2023.
HI Gary! This is a tune I have always wanted to play well. Trouble is, each time I see any "bunch of bananas" grace notes, I freak out, so with this tune, I go through it putting in my own gracings. I am a player that concentrates on rhythm, creating a pulse if you like, to make the music swing like a kilt, and when i come across any grace note combination I cannot get my mind around, I will not play it, for if I did, I would lose my rhythmic abilities, such as they are. looking at this tune, I could not even give a name to the "twiddly bits" so had to find a bagpipe writer .bww version of the tune, just to get the names of the grace notes..help! I have seen you have done a great video on the b to a grip on c gracing, and learned that Susan MacCleod, has a g birl (ok with that) but also a g to a grip on b and a bubbly. As you already play this tune on video, any chance of doing a wee video tutorial on the more complex gracings found within this tune....it might be good to show something a bit more advanced and non-run-of-mill to help folk progress with their technique? I only ask as I feel that in the case of this tune, the gracings are what really make it stand out from the crowd, and being able to play this tune both musically and technically, would for me be a great achievement. Here,s hoping....
Hey Peter, thanks for your comments. Bagpipe tunes go together in 3 stages; fingering, rhythm and expression. You can't have musical expression without fingering and rhythm and you won't be able to play any tune with all of it's components without the fingering. I find that a lot of my students "have the moving van at the curb and their house is still in the framing stage" if you get my drift. I can offer you a free 15 minute consultation to get you in the right direction. I am going to be away until next week and can do a video after that. Why don't you take the music to Susan MacLeod and circle the problems that you face and post it here or email it to me and I'll develop the video around those issues. Here's my link for the consultation: store.bagpipelessons.net/products/15-minute-lesson-consultation?_pos=1&_psq=15&_ss=e&_v=1.0
@@bagpipesforbeginners wow, that is brilliant! I'll see what I can do with an email and get it sent off to you, for when you get back. Talking of which "being away" I was sure I saw you at the piping world championships in Glasgow, but I know I must have been mistaken!!
@@hendryyyutube Hey Peter, just ran into this video in my file. You never sent me the email with the problems that you were experiencing in Susan MacLeod. I'd be happy to follow up on this.
Thank you for this informative video. My questions: is there a problem with learning on/playing an A440 chanter and later playing with pipers who's pipes are not tuned to A440? And how does the A440 tuning impact the learning process? Will I have to transpose the notes in all my lessons? Thanks again.
My Dunfion GHB have been playing well for over 20 years, well made and rock steady.
Excellent playing. Your a tough one to each with most comments turned off. Saw your vid on Pipers Choice Traditional small piped, 2 tenors & bass. I agree, sounds more real and am having a tough time finding a set. Am wondering if your aware of how they can be ordered direct from Canada ?
Hey Mike, where are you located? I just ordered 2 sets of Traditional Small Pipes. I sold one and have one on the shelf. Give me a call if you're interested.

great video Gary thanks ! I just bought one from R.G Hardie. Love the song you played by the way ;) cheers from France (Bretagne)
Not sure on proper wording but here goes (beautiful smallpipes btw)... the word doubletone is described as a bad thing.. after warming up and tuned spot on ,I can put my finger half over the the base drones Bush hole and the alteration of air flow makes the sound go from a single tone to a "double tone".. it's like I added another base drone on my pipes ,,it sounds amazing bringing the base drone from flat to a gurgle... much more life if you will Physics wise I picture I've created a back draft or circular air flow... dose this make sense at all? Could it be done to the tennors?
Hey Matthew, I'm glad that you liked this video. Why don't you put up a video as a demo to illustrate your point?
Hey Gary. Enjoying the journey. Polishing up the timing on this song. Would be helpful if we could see your fingers in these videos. Also just beginning to learn how to blow and hold a steady drone on the Henderson PH1s I purchased from you at the beginning of the year. Your video on that is extremely helpful. Thanks.
Hey Rick, thanks for your comments. I'm glad that you're enjoying the bagpipe. Why don't you take advantage of my 1 free lesson? I could answer your questions.
Hello, I have been looking at Dunfion pipes, the carving and engraving look spectacular, that said there is not much in way of reviews, you dont look like your struggling so airflow doesn't look an issue, 10 years after the video was posted how are they holding up?
Hi James, I still play that set of Dunfions. They play great! Airflow has to do with the bag used, the joints hemped and the reeds used. Why don't you call me and we'll talk about it? My number is on my website: www.bagpipelessons.net.
My Dunfions have been going strong for over 20 years
I had to find a way to say thanks for tuning bagpipes ... I dont know why but I was tuning to high a ... the low a with brawl tunner was ok but getting harmonics has been a battle ... I look forward to hearing my pipes after this .. sorry to hunt ya and again ,, thanks
I'm glad that I could help. If you're talking about the Twist Trap Pipes, the secret is finding the blowing margin. There is a place in the middle where the chanter and the drone reeds are stable.
Very nice Performance...

Hi Gary. Thanks so much for the free lesson. I got the tune and prep sheets, but don't see the rhythm pattern sheet.
Erick dad new year's day birthday card is a good thing putting on the kitchen try not getting that too much
Would you recommend getting these for a beginner in learning the bag pipes or get a just a chanter, then move onto this?
Personally, I would start with a practice chanter and then use this between the practice chanter and the "big pipe". If you insist on buying one, I'll sell it to you.
Yes, I think this is a great instrument to start with, however most bagpipe supply houses are closed right now. You might have a better chance getting a practice chanter. I have them in stock.
Gary, Where can I find the Prep Sheet and the rhythm pattern sheet? It appears there is no longer an active link.
Dear Sir, I'm interested in buying a set like the one you play. I'm doubting between the Walsh Shuttle Pipes and the Twist Trap Practice Pipes. Have you any recommendations that you can give me, are you satisfied with the Twist Trap Practice Pipes? I’m looking for a set of smallpipes that I can use at home because I cannot play my Highland Pipes at home. Best Regards
Werner Middelaer , I think this is a great value for the money. I sell it for $499 USD plus shipping. Where are you located?
Beautiful. Thanks for posting!!!
I like the way you made it simple to follow, fill out the music. We sometimes to forget to start with the simple basics when trying to work out a piece of music.
This is the nearest to a song called Come To Fiona 's wedding that I've found so far.
I first learned this tune in the 70's and it was labeled "The Piper's Polka". It like a lot of tunes has a variety of names.
I've never played before and just ordered a Dunfion...I see you are wearing ear muffs and am intimidated...is it really that loud? Should I too buy some sound mufflers? Regardless, beautiful playing and thanks for sharing! I think the heavenly bagpipe laird will for sure welcome you to BPH :)
Hi Gary, just bought a set after watching you play. Reading previous comments my worry is tuning, is there an app or tuner you can recommend?
Totes HILAR : you won’t be able to tune them until you master the blowing. You have to find the “sweet spot”.
Also you'll probably be better off tuning by ear.
Very nice rendition
Thank you for this video! There are lots of people who can tell you that you they hear crossing noises, but very few who can tell you how to fix them! Pulling things apart like this really helps me understand WHY crossing noise happen and how to work on fixing them!
There is a more current video on crossing noises on my blog: bagpiperblog.com. You might check that out as well. Let me know if I can help.
Actually like these, I'm assuming they play quieter than the full pipes. The sound 🔊 is also sweeter.
Great demo! What was the tune that you played?
Gary, how did you tune your TTPP's? Mine are sounding very snake charmer'ish. My drones sound but they are definitely not in tune. Help !??!
Hi Corey, I'm sorry I just saw this post. The secret to tuning this set is to learn how to blow it properly. As you blow it, you will find a margin where the tone is consistent. That is where you would tune it. It just takes practice.
Nice playing mate - I am thinking of getting myself a set of these as well. All the best for now. Jim
Jim Oates : would you like me to order you one?
That is very kind of you mate - I am actually heading back to Scotland from the USA next week so will be checking them out and probably pick one up then. Cheers. Jim
Just got a set in today. The reeds are incredibly easy and it's hard to find the sweet spot for playing. Any suggestions would be great.
Robert, the first thing that you need to do is to establish the "top margin" of blowing. That is the point where the chanter starts to go sharp if you are blowing too hard. You want to blow right under that margin. Most people play the bagpipe in general with not enough air in the bag. Once you've established a consistent chanter sound, then you can tune the drones. Have fun with these.
I always think the Monty Python sketch of people turning into Scotsmen
It takes a little adjusting to get the blowing right as there is a sweet spot to find. The second part is tuning them. If you don’t tune them properly it overwhelms the Chanter. Why don’t you call me.
I just got a set of these myself but am having difficulties with tuning the chanter... Any tips or tricks?
Matthew Croft : A couple of things: 1) learning to blow it properly is the first task as there is a small margin of pressure that you have to play within. If you over blow it you will never get it in tune. 2). I pushed my reed in deeper as my d and F were out of tune. In doing the it raised the hi A which I then taped. It just takes practice.
I am having the same problem.
The trick to tuning it is learning how to blow between the top and bottom margins. Spend more time practicing on getting the chanter sound steady, then you can tune the drones.
nice chanter looks like a dirk handle
The chanter is a Dunfion African Blackwood PC with dirk carving.
Lovely sound =) name of tune?
But you'r right , very good sound
